Knowledge and Memory is the third volume of the Bibliothèque IA, a six-volume collection on artificial intelligence. This is a French-language book. A model remembers nothing and does not know your documents. When an application seems to know you, a program has stored a few sentences in a file and pastes them at the top of every request. When an assistant answers from your documents, a chain of parts has split, represented, stored and retrieved fragments before showing them to it. This volume builds each of these parts and assembles them into a sourced answer, then checks that the system can say it does not know when the answer is not in the base. Six chapters cover memory, embeddings, vector databases with hybrid search and reranking, ingestion (connecting sources, parsing, chunking), the assembly of retrieval-augmented generation with a workshop on a fictional company's knowledge base, and variants such as cache-augmented generation and knowledge graphs, with what each one costs. The book has 18 figures, worked calculations in optional boxes, Quebec and Canada notes, a glossary, three appendices and the memo sheet for the third belt. It never mentions agents: each part answers a question and decides nothing on its own. It assumes volumes 1 and 2 and a reader who writes small programs, or works alongside someone who does.
What you will be able to do
- Describe what is actually sent to the model at each turn of a conversation, and what memory adds to it
- Fit a durable profile in a simple file and calculate in tokens what it costs per month
- Turn French sentences into vectors, calculate a cosine similarity and work out how much space your vectors will take
- Size an index, assemble a hybrid search and place a reranker in the right spot
- Trace an ingestion chain, evaluate a chunking by what it breaks and project access rights onto every fragment
- Assemble a RAG, measure retrieval first and check that it can say it does not know
- Choose between an ordinary RAG, a knowledge base preloaded in cache and a knowledge graph, and read a product’s real licence in its repository

Excerpt

Who it is for
Developers and integrators who build a memory or a knowledge base for a model, along with those who order or use them and must judge a choice, read a licence and ask the right question.
Prerequisites
Volumes 1 and 2 read, and nothing more. Able to write a small program, or to work alongside someone who does; the volume never mentions an agent.
